The Science News magazine has been running for over 100 years. In the year of its centenary, industry veteran Demian Perry was brought in as Digital Director to improve monetization of the digital product - grow its digital audience, and ultimately convert and retain more paying subscribers.
After successfully implementing an all new paywall and subscription management platform at ScienceNews.org, Demian shifted his gaze to mobile. The current app was optimized (perhaps an overstatement) for the print magazine version. There was limited capability to read the dynamic daily content produced on the website, and app store reviews were low. Very low. With less than three stars averaged across stores, the goal of the new app was to provide a great experience for current subscribers to enjoy all of what Science News has to offer, while allowing non-subscribers to get a taste of what's available.
With a tight budget, and tight turnaround time, 3Advance leveraged its experience and expertise to produce two beautiful apps in less than four months. The new app features a stunning yet accessible design, allowing users to appreciate the visual print content, in addition to the indexed, searchable digital articles. Along with filtering and personalization, the 3Advance team held true to our commitment to accessibility by including features that pushed beyond the required scope. Aligned with our own standards of excellence, the decision was made to fulfill additional expectations we perceive for professional, media consumption apps, with custom sizing, and light/dark mode added to the app before launch.
The engagement with Science News proved a great success, with a surge of 5 star reviews accounting for a revised average store rating above 4.2. With a renewed focus on mobile, and a user experience to match the high quality of Science News content, 2025 promises more collaboration as full In-App Purchasing is planned for the Spring.
"It’s in your head for so long as a concept, and then you actually begin to see it, begin to get a framework, and it becomes real. It’s really cool! Lots of great feedback. People are loving it."
